Two persons suspected to be members of the KNF (MC) were gunned down in a shoot out with troops of the 21 Assam Rifles at a place around half a kilometer along the National Highway-39 under Sapermaina police station at around 8.40 last night even as police rescued the abducted Chief Engineer of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department today.
According to AR reports given to police, the encounter took place when the AR party was entering the area on receipt of information that some underground cadres were carrying out extortion in the area.
Two 12 bore rifles, seven rounds of live ammunition and Rs 5675 in cash have been recovered from the slain militants.
One of the suspected militants has been identified as Thongkhohao Kipgen (21) of Pangjang village under Saikul police station.
The unidentified persons could be around 25 years in age and is fair in complexion.
He sustained multiple bullet injuries.
In yet another incident Irrigation and Flood Control Department Chief Engineer, Arambam Sashikanta, who was outraced since he had been kidnapped by unidentified armed persons, was rescued by the police today.
The Chief Engineer, who was kidnapped on December 2, was rescued at Sangaithel area.
On getting specific information that the abducted officer was being held captive at Veitun Khunou, north of Sangaithel in Imphal west district, a police team of Imphal west district rushed to the area.
The police team launched a massive search operation at the area and finally rescued the officer.
When the police reached the area the abductors had already escaped, according to the police.
